This Elevation project continues Labat’s interest in a kind of sculpture that engages the viewer physically, socially and politically, in order to engage the body as a perceptual whole. The work requires the participants (the institution, the viewer, and the community) to “walk” through the work to gain an understanding of its meaning. This catwalk elevation both allows for appreciation as a sculptural indicator of performance as well as a functional performance platform. Throughout the course of the exhibition Labat has opened up his Elevation to the public to be activated through both planned and impromptu performances, underscoring the artist's interest in both community interaction and artistic authorship.
